Loom Types
Frame Loom Weaving: Structure, Setup and Basic Techniques
An overview of frame and floor loom construction, heddle systems, shed formation, and the mechanical differences between rigid-heddle and shaft-based setups.
Practical reference material on handloom types, yarn fiber characteristics, and structural pattern methods used in handwoven textile work across Poland.
Articles
Three focused reference articles covering the main aspects of handloom work: loom types, fiber behavior, and pattern planning.
Loom Types
An overview of frame and floor loom construction, heddle systems, shed formation, and the mechanical differences between rigid-heddle and shaft-based setups.
Fiber Properties
A comparison of wool, linen, cotton, and silk fiber characteristics: tensile behavior, dye absorption, shrinkage, and suitability for warp versus weft use.
Pattern Construction
How threading sequences, tie-up configurations, and treadling orders combine to produce twill, tabby, and more complex weave structures in handwoven fabric.
Context
Poland has a documented tradition of hand-loom textile production, particularly in the Łódź region, which developed as a major textile-manufacturing centre during the nineteenth century. Traditional rural weaving, using frame looms to produce linen and wool cloth, continued alongside industrial output in many villages across Mazovia, Lesser Poland and Silesia.
Contemporary handweavers in Poland work primarily with rigid-heddle and multi-shaft floor looms, using locally sourced wool and imported cotton yarns. Craft associations and workshops, particularly in Kraków, Wrocław and Warsaw, document regional pattern traditions and provide instruction in traditional threading sequences.
